چکیده

This paper proposes an improved vocal tract model of vowel production, which incorporates acoustic e ects of the piriform fossa and transvelar nasal coupling. In this study, the vocal tract model was derived from the MRI data of a subject. The piriform fossa was modeled based on the MRI data as a side branch of the vocal tract. The velum wall was modeled as a cascaded impedance of a viscous resistance, a mass and a sti ness, which were estimated by acoustic and mechanical experiments conducted on three subjects. Transfer functions of vowels /a/ and /i/ were computed under the conditions of with and without the piriform fossa and transvelar nasal coupling. The results showed that both the piriform fossa and transvelar coupling play important roles in shaping the rst two formants for closed vowels, while the piriform fossa is the main factor a ecting the formants of open vowels. By comparing computed transfer functions with real speech spectra for the same subject, it is clari ed that our improved model gives a more realistic performance than the traditional model.

Visualization of Hypopharyngeal Cavities and Vocal-Tract Acoustic Modeling

The hypopharyngeal cavities constitute a bottom part of the vocal tract near the larynx consisting of the supraglottic laryngeal cavity and the bilateral cavities of the piriform fossa. Visualization of those cavities with custom magnetic resonance imaging techniques reveals that during speech the laryngeal cavity takes a form of a long-neck flask and the piriform fossa a goblet of varying shap...

Acoustic analysis of the vocal tract during vowel production by finite-difference time-domain method.

The vocal tract shape is three-dimensionally complex. For accurate acoustic analysis, a finite-difference time-domain method was introduced in the present study. By this method, transfer functions of the vocal tract for the five Japanese vowels were calculated from three-dimensionally reconstructed magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data. The calculated transfer functions were compared with those...

Simulation and analysis of nasalized vowels based on magnetic resonance imaging data.

In this study, vocal tract area functions for one American English speaker, recorded using magnetic resonance imaging, were used to simulate and analyze the acoustics of vowel nasalization. Computer vocal tract models and susceptance plots were used to study the three most important sources of acoustic variability involved in the production of nasalized vowels: velar coupling area, asymmetry of...

Computerized Analysis of Acoustic Characteristics of Patients with Internal Nasal Valve Collapse Before and After Functional Rhinoplasty.

Acoustic analysis of sounds produced during speech provides significant information about the physiology of larynx and vocal tract. The analysis of voice power spectrum is a fundamental sensitive method of acoustic assessment that provides valuable information about the voice source and characteristics of vocal tract resonance cavities. The changes in long-term average spectrum (LTAS) spectral ...

Perturbations in a frequency glide task due to the feedback coupling from vocal tract to the vocal folds

We present experimental and simulation results on the production of fundamental frequency glides. When the frequency of the vocal fold vibration approaches an acoustic resonance of the vocal tract, a modal locking phenomenon is expected to affect the production of such a glide. Simulations by a vowel production model for glottis and vocal tract provide unambiguous support to this hypothesis. We...
